Shelley on the Nature of Poetry

Fr. Durand’s dissertation, published in its entirety in the Laval journal, is a philosophical commentary on Percy Bysshe Shelley’s A Defence of Poetry, placing it in dialogue with Aristotle, Aquinas, and Maritain, among others.

Fr. Anthony J. Durand (1912–1999) served in the Diocese of London (Ontario, CA) and taught at St. Peter’s Seminary there for many years, as well as at King’s College.

Thomas De Koninck writes in his “Biographical Sketch” of his father that De Koninck relied primarily upon Fr. Durand when asking colleagues and friends proofread and improve his texts written in English. Fr. Durand was also to be involved in the translation of an earlier, French-language version of Ego Sapientia, before De Koninck determined to write the present work in English (Gardner, p. 9). The two carried on an extensive correspondence.
