The Functions of Touch

Fr. Feeley’s dissertation considers St. Thomas’ doctrine of sensation generally and the role of touch specifically, namely, how touch is foundational to sensation itself as well as being foundational to sense appetite. The excerpt of the dissertation, published in the Laval journal, considers the nature of the act of sensation, and the unity of sense power with the sense organ, concluding that the activity of sensation as such is not bifurcated into physical and quasi-spiritual changes.

Fr. Thomas M. Feeley, C.S.C. (1930–2004), earned degrees at Notre Dame and the Gregorian before his doctoral studies at Laval. He taught briefly at King’s College (Wilkesbarre, PA) before spending the majority of his teaching career in philosophy at Stonehill College (North Easton, MA), from 1962–1998. He then served as national director of Holy Cross Family Ministries, and as vice-postulator for the cause of the now Venerable Fr. Patrick Peyton, C.S.C.
