New translation and preview of “The De Koninck Papers”

Updated: Apr 25, 2020

St. Bonaventure

Despite all appearances, work on The Project continues, albeit slowly. Below is a preview of what will hopefully one fruit of the project, along with completing The Writings of Charles De Koninck. As this larger, official project is still a ways off, the following is perhaps better described as a sample of things to come.

That is, two principal “series” of translations are planned. The first series, The De Koninck Papers, are translations or editions of works published by De Koninck and are not planned for inclusion in the English edition of The Writings of Charles De Koninck. The second series, The De Koninck Archives, are translations or editions of unpublished work by De Koninck that have been selected and edited by The Project.

The following sample of what these new series will be like is a new translation of De Koninck’s preface to Hylemorphisme et devenir chez Saint Bonaventure, by Patrice Robert, OFM. This work was the published, monograph version of De Koninck’s first doctoral student’s dissertation. As a work in its own right, it contains many themes similar to the beginning of the second chapter of The Cosmos, which was being drafted around the same time.
